Community Cohesion project for School Councils in Tower Hamlets

This project funded by Tower Hamlets aims to develop community cohesion projects in primary and secondary schools and their communities across Tower Hamlets during the 2017/18 academic year.

Free training for teachers and students will enable school councils to pursue projects that engage communities through the lens of the UN’s ‘Global Goals’, taking action at a local level for issues that interest and motivate their students and school communities.

Students will be trained as project leaders to lead and develop local community projects that engage local communities using action research skills at their level.

This project contributes towards whole school development of:

  • SMSC
  • Global Learning at a local and a global level
  • Approaches to British Values and shared values
  • Pupil voice, student empowerment, citizenship
  • A purposeful and effective school council engaged in Community Cohesion projects that take us beyond fundraising from a charity mentality to one of social justice

This year we are working with pupils across 12 Tower Hamlets schools, all of whom have developed pupil-led creative community cohesion projects, engaging hearts and minds!

Creative Communities | Evaluation Report

This report evaluates the second year of Creative Communities – a Community Cohesion Project with Tower Hamlets Schools, funded by Tower Hamlets Strategy, Policy and Partnerships Service and facilitated by HEC Global Learning Centre, based within the Tower Hamlets Schools Library Services.

The project worked with teachers and representatives of school councils to facilitate pupils/ students learning, creative thinking and action for Equalities and Community Cohesion. It enabled small student-led action projects in partnership with local organisations. A small sum was allocated for evaluation to look at the impact on teachers and young people involved, assess the activities generated and comment on how this met equalities requirements and promoted local community cohesion.

The evaluation was built in, rather than bolted on, collecting feedback from young people and teachers. It gave prominence to young people’s opinions and focussed on impact, learning and sustainability of inputs and outcomes.
